It is still a major challenge for the eastern German states because demographic change coincides with the structural upheavals of 1989. Here, too, society is aging with a declining population and the question of prosperity and intergenerational justice is visible as all areas of society and daily life are affected. Demographic change is not only having a negative impact, however, but is offering younger and well-qualified people in particular better prospects than ever before: very good opportunities are available for well-trained specialists, university graduates and for young people who want to start their vocational training and then stay in their home region. This is what a flyer at the University promises.

Living and working in the village - that was agriculture or forestry for a long time. Today, this is no longer the case. In the past, around 1900, 40 percent of the people worked in the countryside, but today it is only 2 percent of the population. The rapid transformation of the agricultural sector has radically changed rural life.

Five agricultural corporations dominate the world market. ABCD is the abbreviation for the four Western companies that dominate the world trade in agricultural products. Now (2017) a Chinese company has joined them (Cofco/ Peking).
