Reset modernity

Modernity has brought forth this man who allows himself to be addressed by no one, the man who has evacuated the voice of the community from himself and now convinces himself of his immediate goodness. Nevertheless it remained an impossibility to indulge in that reverie that allows one to be unavailable to the world. Thus, modern man has believed for quite some time that he has always managed to forbid anyone else to talk into one´s own self. But this has never been more of an illusion than it is today.

The binary system

Modernity was a way to differenciate past and future, progress and regress, radical and conservative, black and white.

The separation of the "I" and world in the Western tradtion extends to the whole of society and its relation to the environment. According to Fritjof Capra, this results in our ecological, social and cultural crisis of the present.

The Eastern view of the world is organic. Here, human beings see themselves as part of the whole. Man feels that he belongs to the universe and all phenomena are interconnected and dynamic through reciprocal relationships. The Eastern world view is based on time and I Ching (change).

The universe is understood as a fundamental unity.

I am now also trying to get an insight into the meaning of the significance of the vegetal kingdom to human life, consciousness and spirituality. I can relate to that in my garden. Every buzz, every hue, every scent is a personal message to me. Freshly mown grass - smelling it, that feels like a privilege to me. I really get aware of all the life that surrounds me. Living systems are cognitive systems, and the interactions of a living system with its environemt are cognitive interactions. The process of living itself is a process of cognition: to love is to know.

Awareness of the environment is a property of cognition at all levels of life. The organizing activity of living systems at a level of life is mental activity. We are beginning to recognize the creative unfolding of life in forms of ever-increasing diversity and complexity as an inherent characteristic of all living systems. The central focus is on creativity; on life´s constant reaching out to novelty.

In special dynamical systems the order is unpredictable.

The always same side of the moon

However, at a time of deep ecological and economical mutation, such binary systems are failing. Simply because it already draws, while describin, a gap between things and events.

This is why it is time for a reset. Let´s pause for a while, follow the silence. Ignore the language, learn to look. And we need confidence (in ourself) because without confidence democratic life and action is not possible. Confidence can be discovered in the urgent challenges of our day, but the question of a safe, inclusive and sustainable society must be answered and acted by each individual.

The moon orbits arround the earth and it rotates around its own axis. But both exactly the same time, namely 27 days and 7 hours. And thta´s the only reason why we seealways the same side of the moon. The earth behaves quite differently.
