People from
many different countries, with different
religions and ideas, must learn to live
together peacefully. This is where the
concept of tolerance comes into play.
And another one: solidarity
Both sound like compromise.
Solidarity, they say, ensures balance
(not equality!) and balance is only
conducive to democratic politics, which
thrives on compromise in its
problem-solving.
But the
willingness to compromise must therefore
not be too unequally distributed in the
long run. Tolerance is said to be a
consequence of freedom, just as
solidarity is a consequence of
tolerance.
The civil virtue of
tolerance is undoubtedly a consequence
of our individual freedom. But in the
face of crises, everything is put to the
test. But freedom in its possibilities
and limits is closely linked to the
social question and the own social
origin.
