Artist, activist and nice picture
The first month of 2022 has shown how
difficult it has been for a couple of
decades to carry out journalistic work
in the country, with four journalists
murdered and many more threatened,
harassed and persecuted. Claudia
Martínez Sánchez is one of
them. Because the artist and activist is
also President of the National
Collective "Alerta Temprana de
Periodistas y Defensores" (Early Alert
of Journalists and Defenders). This
makes her the target of threats and
intimidation. Claudia's artwork also
deals with the issue of human rights.
And in a very concrete way. Her
paintings are expressive and authentic.

Due to the aggressions and incriminations by the state government, the people of Coyomeapan decided to organise themselves and take to the streets to put a stop to the chieftainship of the Celestino Rosas brothers, supported by Governor Barbosa, and to demand the release of the four human rights defenders in prison since 1 September 2021.

Her activist spirit makes her paint the faces of a broken Mexico; V lists the faces of women and men who have been victims of violence, as well as the devastation caused by transnational companies or the face of mother earth. The conception in her works is an open denunciation to break the silences of those who cannot cry out for justice.

Since February 11, 2022, she has been living a forced displacement due to severe death threats from David Celestino Rosas and his sister, Federal Deputy Araceli Celestino Rosas, both caciques.
Martínez Sánchez's journalistic work managed to prevent the people from being repressed with the use of public force. The government of Luis Miguel Barbosa Huerta tried on several occasions to violate the people with elements of the state police. When they failed, David Celestino and Araceli Celestino hired hitmen to try to execute 11 indigenous defenders in Coyomeapan.
The last violent act was directed against Martínez Sánchez when Mr. Placido Hernández, the indigenous defender of Coyomeapan, and the journalist were preparing an injunction to defend the people against an unconstitutional tax called DAP.
In those days, on 21 January, the journalist received the first death threats on her social networks; however, it was on 22 January when she learned that they would come after the defender Placido Hernández Vázquez suffered an attack on the road; his vehicle was shot at with the intention of assassinating him, fortunately, he got out alive. The journalist had to leave that same morning to save her life.
But on 11 February she received a phone call warning her that she had to leave Puebla because they would now come after her.
This is how the journalist takes up art to save her life. In her black and white colours she creates a series of black and white works called La Periodista (The Journalist).
For Claudia Martínez Sánchez this series is a manifestation of the ink that has been metaphorically spilled by the murders of her fellow journalists who could not finish telling stories that the world needed to know. What stories those murderers didn't want our colleagues to tell," says Claudia.
Another of Claudia Martínez Sánchez's works as an artist is the face of mother earth through a series of tragic faces: Erosion, The death of the earth and man in search of another blue planet. The last of her works is an abstract expression in which she expresses the violence and pain of the political prisoners of the black mountains of Puebla in Coyomeapan.
